Rescuers found a Palm Coast man dead inside a burning car in a wooded area near Epic Theatres of Palm Coast in Town Center Thursday morning.

Henry Cornish, 71, was driving west on Central Avenue in a Volvo station wagon when he "suffered an apparent medical episode," according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The car left the road way and veered onto the grassy south shoulder of the road and then into the woodline, where the undercarriage struck a stump and caught fire with Cornish still inside.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies and fire department rescuers responded to the scene, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Weber said.

The incident happened at about 10:50 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol report.

Central Avenue between Bulldog Drive and Brookhaven Way remained shut down as of 3:20 p.m. Thursday, and Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies were on scene as workers towed away the car.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
