The following is a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office:
A 20-year-old Palm Coast man faces felony charges of aggravated assault after four deputies say he tossed raw eggs and potatoes at them as they were investigating a suspicious incident in the R section of Palm Coast around 10:30 Tuesday night.
Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a loud banging noise coming from outside a reporting person’s bedroom window at 1 Ritchie Place. Though deputies found no sign of forced entry, they did meet Anthony Fennick, of 13 Richardson Drive, who asked why the deputies were there. After getting an explanation, Fennick thanked the deputies and went into his home.
Soon after, however, Deputy Austin Chewning noticed a potato cut in half landed in the roadway behind another deputy’s patrol car. Deputies searched in vain to see who might have thrown the pre-Thanksgiving staple at law enforcement officers.
Then as the deputies were talking, an egg struck the front passenger side door of Deputy Chewning’s vehicle, nearly striking him and another deputy. While deputies searched for the food assailant, they noticed three more eggs lying broken on the road in front of Richardson Drive, along with a potato and some kind of citrus fruit. Two deputies then spoke with Fennick and shortly after, arrested him. Deputies searching Fennick found an egg in his front left pocket. Deputies said Fennick had been found near an air conditioning unit at 4 Richelieu Lane, where a screen surrounding a window had been pried.
Deputies brought Fennick back to his home where they interviewed his mother and stepfather and asked whether they’d recently purchased eggs. A quick examination of a carton of eggs, purchased Tuesday, showed that five eggs were missing from the dozen, which equaled the four eggs tossed at deputies and one egg found in Fennick’s pocket. Deputies also found two bags of potatoes on the kitchen counter, along with a serrated knife that had been recently used. When asked, Fennick’s mother said she had cleaned her kitchen before she went to bed and the knife wasn’t on the counter then.
Fennick was charged with four counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, criminal mischief and loitering/prowling and remained held on $7,000 bail.
