+ Operation Changing Lives provides toys
Operation Changing Lives provided toys for more than 200 children Flagler County children Sunday, Dec. 9, at its toy drive distribution. The nonprofit works with the Flagler Christmas Angels program to provide for local families in need.
Operation Changing Lives is a nonprofit formed by doctors Curtis Schalit and John Akers to perform life-altering maxillofacial surgeries on disadvantaged patients with severe facial deformities, both in the United States and abroad. Over the years, the organization has added a second aspect, which is providing toys to underprivileged children during the holiday season.
“I see so many families here (inn Flagler and Volusia Counties) that are struggling,” Schalit said. “There’s nothing worse to me to think of the kids that don’t have anything on Christmas Day.
The organization will hold its Volusia County distribution next week.

+ Relay for Life to host team party
Flagler County Relay for Life will host a December Team Party 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at
Grace’s Place, 1000 Palm Coast Parkway S.W. They will be honoring all survivors with a holiday gift.

Harry and Lucy Davis, of Palm Coast, hosted a book signing for award-winning tennis journalist and former reporter for USA Today at their home. Doug Smith’s new book is entitled “Same Same.”
+ German American Friendship Club accepts new members
The German American Friendship Club of Palm Coast is accepting new members for the 2013 calendar year. Club activities include dinner dances with music, two picnics per year, and day trips within Florida. Dues are $25 per person. For further information, call Dan at 283-5755.
+ Flagler AAUW Reading Women celebrate holiday
The Reading Women Book Club of the Flagler County branch of the American Association of University Women held its annual December holiday meeting at Epping Forest Yacht Club in Jacksonville. The book for discussion was “The Tower, The Zoo and The Tortoise,” by Julia Stuart about the Tower of London.

+ Scholarship applicants sought for Woman’s Club
The Flagler Woman’s Club will award multiple $1,000 scholarships in theater, music, arts or general areas of studies to graduating seniors (male or female) from Flagler County. An applicants must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Flagler County for a minimum of one year, have a financial need, and qualify for acceptance to a college or a trade school.
Applications are available at Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools, the Flagler Beach Library and the Flagler County Public Library. Application deadline is Feb. 15. For more information, call Kay Johnson at 439-3960 or 405-8518.
+ High school students recognized at Art League
Students from both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools showed their work as part of the Flagler County Art League’s December show.
Best in Show went to Carissa McClellan, FPC; 1st place, Kadie Lachiewicz, FPC; 2nd place: Tom Brock, Matanzas; and 3rd place, Erica Maron, FPC.
