The Flagler Palm Coast Boys Lacrosse team is used to competition, but this November they'll have a new kind of contest to master: No Shave November.
The team is holding the event to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Participants will have 30 days to grow award-winning facial fuzz. Winning categories include best overall style, longest overgrowth, best mustache, best beard and “Joe Dirt.” Trimming is okay.
Participants register for a $20 fee and must begin the contest clean-shaven. Each will be photographed smooth-faced for a before-and-after comparison.
The contest will begin Nov. 1 with a 6-8 p.m. meeting at Woody’s Bar-B-Q, and end at 7 p.m. Nov. 30. The registration fee includes a Woody’s sandwich on registration night.
Funds will be donated to Florida Hospital Flagler.
Florida Hospital Flagler creates Patient-Family Advisory Council
Florida Hospital Flagler has created a Patient-Family Advisory Council comprising community members who have been patients or visitors at the hospital.
The group will meet six times a year for 90 minutes each session, according to a hospital press release, in order to “embark on initiatives to help Florida Hospital Flagler extend the healing ministry of Christ by creating a lasting, collaborative group of patients, family members and staff.”

The last day to request applications is Oct. 25, and all applications must be submitted by Nov. 1.

Florida Hospital Flagler announces new Cancer Center medical director
Local hematologist and oncologist Padmaja Sai will serve as the new medical director for Florida Hospital Flagler’s Cancer Center, according to a hospital press release.
As medical director, she will help develop the Cancer Center’s clinical research strategy, deliver patient care services and help make sure the hospital complies with local, state and federal laws.
Sai is board certified in hematology and oncology. She is member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Local dental group offers cash for candy this Halloween
To encourage kids to keep their teeth and gums healthy, Flagler Dental Associates will give them $1 for each pound of candy they drop off at the group’s offices after Halloween.
"If kids ditched their candy for a dollar," Flagler Dental Associates dentist Ryan Smith said in a press release, “they would give their teeth a much-needed healthy boost and potentially avoid future cavities.”
Some candy can break teeth and damage braces, and sugar contributes to weight gain and heart problems and about a third of new diabetes cases in the U.S., according to the press release.
Candy will be collected at the group’s two location — 30 Office Park Drive and 97 Flagler Plaza Drive — from Nov. 1 to Nov. 10. The candy will be shipped to troops overseas.
