The following is a news release from the Flagler County communications office:

Firefighters battling a blaze in western Flagler County the night of Nov. 28 found a man dead inside the home.

The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at 40 Kentucky Avenue off of County Road 2006 shortly after 8:44 p.m.

“The flame appeared to have started in the back of the house,” Flagler County Fire Rescue Capt. Richard Bennett said.

The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of his family. The garage behind the house and a recreational vehicle also caught fire.

Eighteen firefighters from Flagler County, Bunnell and Palm Coast were called to douse the flames. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler.

Electricity was turned off affecting about 1,000 homes on the same grid.

Flagler County Fire Marshal Joe King and State Fire Marshal Jeff Ruland began investigating the cause of the fire shortly after midnight.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office detectives were also called to the scene to assist with the investigation. The Medical Examiner was en route.

“We will still be here for many hours,” Bennett said.

UPDATE: The Flagler County Sheriff's Office released the following statement the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 29:

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a neighbor at approximately 8:44 p.m. last evening stating a home located at 40 Kentucky Avenue in Bunnell was on fire.

According to the caller, two young children came to their home and said their house was on fire and they could not wake up their father who was still in the home.

The neighbor responded to the home, but due to the strength of the fire and smoke, was not able to make entry into the home.

Firefighters from Flagler County, Bunnell and Palm Coast extinguished the fire and subsequently located the body of a man in the home.

The home is considered to be a total loss.

Detectives from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the Flagler County Fire Marshal and investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the origin of the fire and the death of the unidentified man.

An autopsy will be conducted by the medical examiner’s office to determine the identity of the man, as well as the actual cause of death.

Additional information will be made available as the investigations continue.
