Palm Coast artist Linda Solomon is a free spirit. When she paints, she likes to move and use big brushes.

“I like working so large and so big,” she said, while sitting on her back porch, overlooking her garden.

A collection of Solomon’s larger-than-life canvases hung in Hollingsworth Gallery last month, some of her pieces spanning 48-by-60 inches.

“I think the spiritual part comes through, so beyond being an abstract impressionist, there’s a harmony in the paintings,” Solomon said.

But her style has transformed over the years. In the early stages of her art career, Solomon was a minimalist, using subtle and dark colors. But when she got her master’s degree, she was opened up to a more abstract technique.

“It was a new world, but I loved it once I got there,” she said.

Her work has also become stronger in color and much brighter recently. Solomon believes this might be due to her return to Florida, after living in rainy Seattle for three years.

She has depicted “dances of universal peace,” which are spiritual dances from all cultures of the world.

But ultimately, her work is about her life, from physical landscapes to her grief after the death of her adopted son.

Now, she is sharing her art with others through teaching oil and watercolor painting at Hollingsworth Gallery.

“It’s fun being able to help a person go a little further,” Solomon said. “It’s exciting just to paint and teach.”
