To prepare the way for country music band Little Texas and the rest of the music and festivities at the KIX Country Fest, the Flagler County Fairgrounds has been transformed from a rodeo facility into what David Ayres calls a “first-class major concert venue.”
Ayres, the general manager of Flagler Broadcasting, has worked with the county to enhance the fairgrounds so that more people could attend the festival, which is this weekend, Oct. 23-24.
County Administrator Craig Coffey said the venue has great potential.
“This is a good test to see how some new opportunities might work at the fairgrounds,” he said.
Other groups, including the Rough Riders, 4-H and the organizers of Cracker Day, have approached the county and asked for improvements. Among the suggestions were to put in bleachers on the opposite side of the grandstand, which currently seats about 750.
“If we cover the arena, we could do a ton more things,” Coffey added.
County commissioners, particularly Commissioner George Hanns, have supported the idea of exploring ways to enhance the fairgrounds, Coffey said.
Ayres hopes to test the capacity with the music festival. “There are 10,000 tickets out there,” he said. Many are being given away for free, in hopes that the attendance will be strong, to benefit a large number of food and alcohol vendors. See the box on this page for locations to pick up free tickets.

The festival benefits F-H, the Future Farmers of America, Rough Riders, Flagler Cats, and people are bringing canned goods for Feed Flagler, as well.
“This will be history,”Ayres said. “This will be the biggest thing ever at the Flagler County Fairgrounds — no question.”
