For the second week in a row, the Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas High School football teams will not play a game.
On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the Flagler County Schools announced that classes were canceled for the remainder of the week and would not resume until Monday, Sept. 18. And because athletic activities cannot occur while school is out of session, the games previously scheduled to take place on Friday, Sept. 15, will not occur.
FPC (2-0) was scheduled to take on St. Augustine at home, and Matanzas (0-1) was set to take on Seabreeze in Daytona Beach.
The Bulldogs’ game against Seabreeze and the Pirates’ game against Spruce Creek were canceled last week due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irma, which devastated parts of Florida and caused immense flooding and power outages across the county.
The head coaches of the two schools — Travis Roland of FPC and Robert Ripley of Matanzas — echoed their disappointment in not being able to play but understood the school district’s decision.
“People don’t have power,” Roland said. “It’s hard to ask kids who don’t have power to come play football. … With football, we have to realize that there are a lot more important things going on in the world.”
As for when the games will be made up, neither coach could give an exact date, but both are currently working to make sure those games will be played at some point during the season.
“It’s going to make some unique scheduling issues for the next couple of weeks,” Ripley said. “The next step is to figure out a date that suffices both coaches, the athletics directors and our future opponents.”
