Gov. Rick Scott on Wednesday proposed including $480 million in the 2013-2014 proposed budget to support a $2,500 pay increase for all full-time, classroom public teachers in Florida.

Scott announced the news while speaking at Ocoee Middle School.

The full budget, which will be released in the coming weeks, will need to pass the Legislature before it can be signed into law. It will also need to be collectively bargained at the district level to be implemented.

“Today, we are at an exciting place in the history of education in Florida — thanks in large part to the hard work of our teachers,” Scott said. “Florida teachers are the heart of the success of Florida students.”

Earlier this year, the School Board approved a step increase for administrators throughout the county.

Added Scott: “This is a great day for education in Florida. We have made the hard choices over the last few years to get our economy growing again. We are back on track. Now, we need to double down on our investment in education.”
