FPC shuts out Mainland, 3-0

Flagler Palm Coast High School dominated the court Tuesday night in the first match of the season against Mainland winning three games, 25-13, 25-19 and 25-9.

Last year, FPC went five games and two hours against Mainland and ended up losing. Coach Shakirah Cousins said that the difference is a testament to the hard work and improvements the team has made over the course of one season.

“I couldn’t have asked for better passing and defense,” she said. “That’s what I said we would work on, and that’s exactly what they did. They did an excellent job.”

The Lady Bulldogs were led on the court Tuesday night by senior Olga Nushtayeva and her setter, Sydney Schake.

“No. 6 on FPC (Nushtayeva) had some awesome hits; we couldn’t stop her,” said Mainland coach Sandra Garner.

Cousins said that, in addition, her juniors Monica Dorman and Noelle O’Connor have stepped it up and are a huge part of the team this year.

“I’m looking for them to keep on growing,” Cousins said. “I see little things that we are going to tweak, but I just see us growing and getting even better as the season goes on.”
