The Flagler County School District was notified Friday, July 27, that it was one of 214 districts chosen by the Department of Education and Microsoft Learning to develop a local Microsoft IT Academy.

The notification came by email, from Florida Department of Education Career and Adult Education Chancellor Rod Duckworth.

“This partnership will provide training for identified teachers, teaching resources and guidance in developing a true academy,” Diane Dyer, curriculum director, said of the designation. “The goal is to prepare students to earn Microsoft Industry Certification before they graduate, and to make them career- and college-ready.”

According to Dyer, the academy is a perfect fit for Flagler, to accompany the district’s other opportunities for acceleration — such as the International Baccalaureate program, Advanced Placement, virtual school, dual enrollment and more.

“What a wonderful learning opportunity for us,” Dyer said, adding that she has assured the Department of Education that Flagler is more than ready to meet its “challenging” timeline and implementation plan.

“I told them that we are Flagler County and can meet any challenge,” she added. “This is an opportunity for our students that the half-penny sales tax makes possible.”
