Flagler County is pushing the Florida Department of Transportation to add a traffic light at the intersection U.S. 1 and Old Dixie Highway in Korona after a crash there killed five people Feb. 5.
The Flagler County Commission voted unanimously at its regular Feb. 20 meeting to send a letter to the FDOT in support of a letter Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly sent Feb. 6 urging that the intersection be signalized.
Staly, who responded to the scene of the crash, said at the meeting that in the last three years, the Sheriff's Office has investigated 207 crashes at or near the intersection, of which 147 involved injuries.
"I'm certainly no a traffic engineer, but I'm a commonsense kind of guy, and I think the community and all the commissioners know that this is a bad intersection," he said. "Only one that doesn't understand that is FDOT. They want to do more studies, and the bureaucratic fix."
FDOT has painted white stripes and added signage at the intersection since the crash, but Staly said that wouldn't be enough.
"That’s not going to stop this kind of crash, because of the design of U.S.1," Staly said to the commissioners. "I think in this situation, we have to keep the pressure on them. So I appreciate the support that you can provide to get the state to operate and react, In my opinion, the only solution is a traffic light there."
