All lanes of Interstate 95 that were closed earlier today because of a fire in St. Johns County are now open, according to an update from the Florida Highway Patrol.
The north and south lanes of U.S. 1 are now closed.
Beadle said the fire started yesterday on the west side of I-95, but the winds blew the flames over the interstate and set fire to the east side near the exit at U.S. 1 and I-95.
The last time that happened, Beadle said, was in the wildfires of 1998.
The Palm Coast Fire Department is assisting with structure protection.
Beadle said the fire is burning northward, and so Flagler County is safe for the time being. The winds are supposed to change tomorrow, though, and rain is in the forecast.
He predicted that the smoke could blow south into Flagler County, which could alarm residents, but he said it’s nothing to worry about here.
“If you see flames, we got problems, but we’ve had smoke drifting in from the Carolinas before,” Beadle said. “It’s just part of living in Florida.”
