Construction of a National Guard base in Flagler has been delayed due to lack of funding. But that doesn’t mean that the project is dead, according to Deputy County Administrator Sally Sherman.
“The project is alive and still being actively worked on,” she said, adding that the Guard has also had preliminary discussions with Palm Coast and the county to secure right-of-way permit use off Belle Terre Parkway.
Planned as a replacement for the base currently open in Daytona Beach, an Army National Guard Facility in Flagler may now not begin construction until 2018, after being denied its application for special federal funding this year. But Sherman calls that estimate “conservative.”
“They have their design plans about 80% complete,” she said.
Initially estimated at $20.8 million and with a move-in date of September 2015, the base is planned to be built on land south of the Flagler County Airport. It is currently the Florida National Guard’s top-priority project, and officials hope funding will come through the Future Years Defense Program.
The new Palm Coast facility is planned to be 83,312 square feet, which is more than 55,000 square feet larger than the Daytona base, at 405 Basin St.
