The fate of fireworks at Falgler Beach for the Fourth of July will have one more lifeline at a special meeting at 4 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the county.

The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners has called a special meeting  to discuss amending the county’s emergency fire ban, which will allow a professional fireworks display on July 4, the release states.

However, according to Carl Laundrie, communications manager for the county, the countywide burn ban would still be intact for residents, which prohibits all open flames, including fireworks and sparklers.

County Commissioner Milissa Holland said she stands by her decision that having fireworks at this time is still too dangerous.

"Yes, we have had rain and that has helped tremendously," Holland said Thursday after the release was sent out. "But let's not forget that we still have a burn ban in effect over the entire county, which has not been lifted.

"I have weighed all of this and I cannot in good conscience reverse my decision on this issue," Holland continued. "If it's overturned, I believe it will send the wrong message to our public that government does not play by the same rules as we expect them to."

The meeting will be held in the County Commission chambers at the Government Services Building. The meeting is open to the public and will also be broadcast live on FCTV Bright House Networks digital channel 198 and streamed on Flagler County’s website at www.flagercounty.org.
