The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious death after the unidentified body of man was discovered Friday afternoon behind a residence at 18 Covington Lane.

The white, middle-aged man was found behind the home and reported by neighbors, said Lt. Bob Webber, public information officer for the Sheriff’s Office. Weber said he believed the body was found on dry land and that he was unaware of its physical state.

The area has been roped off, and the rear of the home is obstructed from sight as the investigation proceeds. Sheriff Jim Manfre and Undersheriff Rick Staly responded to the scene shortly after a 911 call was received around 2:45 p.m.

Officials from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrived later, and once they are finished assessing the physical scene, a medical examiner will evaluate the body and try to determine cause of death, Webber said.

FDLE officials, deputies and Jack Bisland, the Sheriff Office’s new commander of the investigative services division, were still at the scene around 6:30 p.m.

“Any time you find a body, the tendency is to treat it as a crime scene, and that’s what we’re doing,” Webber said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
