Access Flagler, lead by Flagler County employee Janet Nickels and Pastor Charles Silano, of Grace Tabernacle, has been announced as this year’s recipients of the June Heister Award from the Volusia Flagler Coalition for the Homeless.
The June Heister Award is an annual award established in honor of June Heister who bequeathed her estate to recognize organizations who help to end homelessness in Volusia and Flagler counties.
The Coalition Board voted to recognize Access Flagler as the organization that has the greatest impact on the prevention and intervention in homeless this year in Flagler and Volusia counties. Access Flagler is a monthly event that brings agencies serving residents together with the families and individuals that may qualify for their services. It also offers a wide range of services including food and clothing.
“It started off slow and has continued to grow,” Nickels said. “One of the biggest things we do is intervention to keep people from becoming homeless. People come to us and they are overwhelmed with the situation and we walk them to the service provider on site that can help them.”
Previously held at the Flagler County Extension Services building, the event moved to Cattleman’s Hall at the Flagler County Fairgrounds, in January, to accommodate the growing attendance.
Access Flagler is 1-4 p.m. the first Friday of every month, at 150 Sawgrass Road, Bunnell. It is free and open to the public.
